Elixir-Excelerate Workshop - Capacity Building in Genome Assembly and Annotation

This workshop represents the first chance to discuss how the Excelerate task 10.3 should be implemented. What do we consider important and want to focus on? The task description mentions a collaboration with WP6 on marine organisms and with WP8 on plants. A development of web services to facilitate interaction of users with genomic data is also mentioned. We need to find technical solutions for these issues, but also make sure there are groups responsible to makes these things a reality.

N2N seminar: Developing methods and tools to annotate and explore genomes through “omics” data analysis and integration

The recent successes of new sequencing technologies allow today sequencing increasingly large genomes at reduced costs. Transposable elements (TEs) constitute the most structurally dynamic components and the largest portion of nuclear sequences of these large genomes, e.g. 85% of the maize genome (Schnable et al. 2009), and 88% of the wheat genome (Choulet et al. 2010). Therefore, TEs annotation should be considered a major task in these genome projects.
